Anxiety & Nerves

Whitsunday Family Dental's professionals focus on delivering the best dental care in a calm and comfortable environment. We are acutely aware of the anxiety and nervousness that may surround a visit to the dentist. BPD staff acknowledge your anxieties, whether it be financial or a fear of pain, and we help to ease such anxieties through listening, open communication, providing information, allowing the patient to make decisions and offering pain management options.

Financial anxiety

Many people think that the dentist is exorbitantly expensive and as such, may become concerned and anxious about the expense of a dental visit. At Whitsunday Family Dental, the Dentists and Hygienist always provide what we call a 'treatment plan' (or estimate) before any treatment commences and we discuss the options with you. It is our philosophy at BPD to listen to your needs and allow you to make an informed decision.

Pain and anxiety management

If the thought of dental treatment makes you anxious, please remember that you are not alone! At Whitsunday Family Dental we are committed to helping patients overcome their dental fears, so they can receive the treatments they need.

We find the best way to overcome anxiety and manage pain through the use of nitrous oxide (known as 'happy gas'). It has a calming effect, relaxing the patient and allowing us to complete the dental work required.

Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)

Nitrous oxide, more commonly referred to as 'happy gas', is a frequently used analgesic in modern dentistry. You'll inhale nitrous oxide through a nose mask before treatment begins, then once the gas has been inhaled, you will feel relaxed. Nitrous Oxide takes effect very quickly, within a few minutes of inhalation and is quickly reversed after treatment. Once the flow of nitrous oxide has stopped, you will return to normal functioning within a few minutes.

General Anaesthetic

Certain dental cases may warrant or require a general anaesthetic. This option is available at Whitsunday Family Dental clinic and can be discussed with your dentist.
